Born in 1939, Benjamin Z. Grant earned his J.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1968. Grant worked as an aide for State Representative Cread L. Ray before succeeding him in the Texas House of Representatives for the Third Congressional District from 1971 to 1981.
